Suzie had left the hub shortly after Jack had. She had a call to make. She had her mobile in her pocket but she wasn’t going to use that. It was too easy to trace.

She was furious. There was no hint in her body of her anger. She walked normally, blending in, not wanting to get noticed. She was good at this.

She reached a payphone. Not the nearest payphone. She fed the money into the slot and dialled quickly.

The voice which answered was gruff and suspicious. “What?”

“It’s me,” she hissed.

“Oh.”

“What on earth do you think you’re playing at?”

“Doing your dirty work.”

“Well, you’ve messed up. You killed the wrong person.”

“Oh. But he tasted so sweet.”

Suzie pulled a face. “I don’t care how sweet he tasted, he was the wrong fucking whore.”

There was silence and Suzie fed in another coin.

“What do you want us to do?”

Suzie sighed impatiently. “Wait. I’ll contact you when I want you to make another attempt. And if you don’t kill him this time, that’s the end of my protection. I can get my bodies elsewhere. Understand?”

“We understand.”

Suzie hung up the phone, glanced around her and walked back down the street.

Ianto stayed silent as he was led down into the depths of the hub. They passed several cells with strange creatures inside. He glanced at them as he passed them, storing them inside his head. There were teeth. There was slime. There was power. But Ianto wasn’t scared. He was intrigued. He wanted to know more about these strange creatures, these captured aliens. He wanted to know everything.

Owen was watching him. Ianto didn’t know what it was but something about the doctor made Ianto want to be his very best. He didn’t want to appear weak in front of him. He wanted to show his strength.

Owen opened the next door and Ianto found himself in another room of cells. In two cells, were three people he knew.

In the first cell, was Kiral. He didn’t know him well but he’d seen him around and heard about him. He knew he was a good man. In the next cell, were his friends Patrick and Thomas.

Ianto went straight up to their cell door and pressed his hands against the thick glass.

“Ianto! They’ve got you here too!” Thomas cried.

“Not like that. I…I’m a witness, I suppose. They’re letting you out of here.”

Thomas glanced at Owen who shrugged.

“I’ve got to see what my boss says first.”

Ianto’s eyes widened, then he frowned. “Jack will let them out. He will, won’t he?”

Owen shrugged. “Who knows? Jack hasn’t made any sense to me for months.”

Ianto returned his attention to his friends.

“I will get you out of here. I promise.”

Patrick’s eyes were wide as he looked at Ianto. “Please, Ianto. I don’t like it in here.”

Ianto met his eyes. “It’ll be okay,” he said firmly. He exchanged nods with Thomas, then moved back to the other cell.

“You didn’t do anything, did you, Kiral?” he asked.

Kiral smiled at him. “Not anything to get this lot involved.” He looked seriously at Ianto. “They’re looking for murderers, m’boy. You be careful out there.”

Ianto looked down. “I know. They killed my friend.”

“I’m sorry,” said Kiral and he sounded genuinely sad for Ianto. “If you need anything, you know where to come.”

Ianto looked up and smiled a little. “Thanks.” He glanced at Owen. “We should go. We’ve got to talk to Jack.”
