“You saved me,” whispered Jack. He kept saying it over and over. He couldn’t stop. Ianto had saved him.
He rested his head on Ianto’s firm, slightly hairy tummy and felt Ianto’s slow and steady breathing. Ianto stroked Jack’s back with firm and gentle fingers.
“I did what I had to do,” murmured Ianto.
Jack looked up at him. “Weren’t you scared?”
Ianto shook his head. “I was more scared of what would happen if I didn’t do it.”
Jack wrinkled his nose in confusion. “Oh. What were you scared of happening?”
Ianto blushed, but tried to pretend he wasn’t. “I was scared of you not coming back.”
“Scared of being without me?”
“Partly. But…more scared of you having to live there forever. I didn’t want you to have to hurt that much. You didn’t deserve it.”
Jack looked back down at Ianto’s belly button. “You don’t know what I’ve done. I’ve done some terrible things, Ianto.”
Ianto’s hand closed on Jack’s shoulder and held him tightly. “It doesn’t matter what you’ve done. You don’t deserve punishment. You deserve forgiveness. I’ve given you forgiveness because I believe that God would give you forgiveness.”
Jack shifted upwards and rested his head on the pillow beside Ianto’s. He looked right into Ianto’s eyes.
“What if I don’t believe in God?”
Ianto smiled and stroked Jack’s cheek. “It doesn’t matter, because he believes in you.”
He lowered his eyes and his blush deepened. He glanced up at Jack through his long eyelashes. “I believe in you too.”
Jack’s eyes widened. “You…you don’t want to know what I’ve done?”
“I said it doesn’t matter. You’re forgiven. I know it. Because you’re a good person. God knows that. And I know that.”
Jack smiled softly at him. “You really are my angel,” he murmured in wonder.
Ianto blushed. “Your angel?”
Jack grinned. “Yes. My angel. You saved me. You risked yourself and…you came into the darkness to save me.” He shuffled forwards and kissed Ianto softly on the lips. “Thank you.”
Ianto smiled, then snuggled close to Jack, his head tucking neatly under Jack’s chin. “Payback,” he whispered. “For saving me.”
Jack kissed Ianto gently on the top of his head. “We’re each other’s angels then.”
Ianto smiled. “Guardian angels,” he murmured, then drifted off to sleep.
