Jack was driving too fast. Ianto had noticed but didn’t like to mention it. It would be rather…impertinent. Ianto watched Jack, watched that intense gaze, peering through the rain and focusing on the muddy road.
They were on their way back from investigating what had looked like alien invaders coming through the rift but had turned out to be a blip on the rift predictor. Jack wasn’t happy and he was anxious to get back. He kept his eyes on the road and grumbled from time to time.
Ianto pretended he wasn’t watching Jack. He peered across at him out of the corner of his eye, watching the strong jaw work itself as Jack got more and more stressed.
“Sir, maybe you should…”
“What, Ianto? Maybe we should never have come? Maybe this whole thing was a complete waste of time and it’s going to damn well be morning before we get back?”
Ianto bit his lip. “No. I was just going to say, maybe you should slow…”
Suddenly, the car shuddered. The lights cut out. The wheels squealed and skidded and they were both jerked forwards, their seat belt digging into their chests.
Nothing followed but silence.
Then Jack let out a breath of air. “Ianto?”
Ianto dimly registered Jack’s voice.
“Ianto!” Jack called again.
“I’m here. I’m all right.”
Jack let out another breath which sounded like one of relief. “Okay, let’s check out the damage. Sounded like a tyre bursting.”
He unclipped his seat belt which some difficulty, then opened the car door and stepped outside into the rain.
Ianto moved gingerly. His chest felt bruised but he thought he was uninjured. He craned around, testing the muscles in his neck. He was all right.
Jack came back. Ianto could sense his bad temper.
“We’ve blown a tyre. Fuck.”
Ianto bit his lip. “Can’t we change it? It’s not that hard.”
“No spare. Fucking Owen mustn’t have replaced it when he got that flat last week.” He glared at Ianto. “I thought you were supposed to check things like that. Isn’t that what an office boy is for?”
Ianto frowned. “Sorry. But there’s no need to get snitty with me. Just call Owen and get him to drive over with a spare.”
Jack fell silent and scowled for several minutes at the steering wheel. Ianto waited quietly.
Finally, Jack sighed and relaxed a little into his seat. “All right. I’ll call Owen. Guess we’ll just have to wait until he gets here.”
He dug in his pocket, found his mobile phone and within a few seconds, he was talking loudly to Owen, barking instructions at him.
Ianto took off his tie and jacket to be more comfortable. He touched his chest lightly through his shirt, feeling the bruise and the slight swelling caused by the seat belt. Painful, but better than being sent through the windscreen.
“Right,” said Jack. “Owen’s on his way.”
“How long will he be, do you think?”
“Well, in good weather we’re about an hour and a half from the hub. In this…two hours? Plus however long it takes for him to find a tyre and get his fucking arse in gear.”
Ianto chewed his lip. “Oh.” He knew what he wanted to do in these two hours alone with Jack but Jack was too worked up to notice and Ianto wasn’t going to ask. No way.
Jack took his coat off and draped it over the back of his seat. It was damp from his trip into the rain.
Ianto watched the rain and listened to Jack’s breathing. Both were getting heavy. Ianto wondered what Jack was thinking, whether he was still mad.
Jack was watching the rain too, watched it pour unceasingly all around them. He wasn’t happy. Stuck in this for another two hours at least. He had work to be doing. There was always work to be doing.
Ianto sighed and Jack glanced at him. “What’s the matter with you?” he asked.
Ianto shrugged. “Nothing. So, are we just gonna sit here for two hours?”
Jack shrugged and tapped his thumbs on the steering wheel. “You should’ve brought a book.”
“Well from now on I’ll stow a book in the glove compartment for when your driving gets too bad.”
Jack scowled. “There’s nothing wrong with my driving!” He tried to look stern but then he cracked a smile. “All right, all right. I should’ve slowed down.”
Ianto smiled back. “Speed Queen.”
Jack cuffed him playfully round the head. “Yeah, yeah, cheeky pup.”
Ianto smiled, feeling soothed inside. He stretched. “I’m tired. I’m going to have a lit down in the back.”
Jack reached out and cupped his chin. “You haven’t got concussion, have you? Did you hit your head?”
Ianto shook him off. “No. I’m fine. Not a bump. It’s getting late, is all.”
“Oh, yeah. I forget about…sleep and all that. Go on. You have a nap then.”
Ianto climbed into the back and settled down with his head on his jacket to sleep. He closed his eyes and thought about Jack.
It was odd, he thought. It had been almost a month since the first time. Ianto didn’t quite know what it meant. Him and Jack. It was odd.
He knew it was about comfort. For both of them. They both needed it. Ianto liked being needed. It made up a little for what had happened with Lisa, if he could be there for Jack.
It was scary too though. Him and Jack. Ianto didn’t like to talk about it. Nobody else knew. It was just them. Him and Jack. That was all that mattered. It was just…Ianto didn’t quite know ask for what he wanted with Jack.
Suddenly, Jack climbed into the back and sat down on the car floor. Ianto jerked in surprise but Jack settled gazing out of the windscreen and rested his head on Ianto’s tummy.
“I know I’m a grumpy sod,” Jack grumbled. “You can tell me off, you know. If I’m being a grumpy git, just call me on it.”
Ianto frowned. “And you wouldn’t get madder?”
Jack laughed. “Well, I might. But that’s just me.” He closed his eyes and sighed. “At least I’m not alone here. At least I’ve got you, my loyal boy.”
Ianto smiled. “Yes, Sir. Your boy.”
Jack tipped his head back to look at Ianto. “Why do you do that?”
“Do what?”
“Call me Sir?”
“’Cause…you’re my Captain.” Ianto didn’t know how else to explain it.
Jack went back to looking out of the front window and there was silence for a long time.
Ianto closed his eyes and, without even thinking about what he was doing, reached out and began to run his fingers through Jack’s hair and caress his brow. Jack sighed contentedly.
“Your Captain,” Jack murmured.
Ianto smiled and continued to stroke Jack’s hair.
“Your lover,” said Jack and looked back up at Ianto.
Ianto met his eyes. “And I’m your boy.”
Jack grinned. “Yep!” He got up. “Move over,” he said and lay down on the back seat beside Ianto.
Jack’s big strong arms went around Ianto, folding him up in an embrace, burying his nose in Ianto’s hair and breathing him in.
“Mmm, Ianto, Ianto,” murmured Jack, holding Ianto tight.
Ianto found himself with his face in Jack’s chest, able to breathe in that rich, intoxicating smell. He felt sleepy and settled here in Jack’s arms.
“Ianto,” Jack whispered.
“Uh huh?”
“I’m glad you’re with me. And not just here. I mean…I’m glad I’ve got you in my life, for however long.” Jack pressed a soft kiss to the top of Ianto’s head.
Ianto pulled back just enough to look Jack in the eye and smiled when he saw pure honesty there.
“Yeah,” he said. “Me too.”
He cuddled close to Jack, breathing him in and returning the gentle caresses Jack gave to his back. He closed his eyes, feeling himself drifting off to sleep in Jack’s arms. He could feel Jack slowly falling asleep as well and their breathing evened out together as they held each other in their arms.

Sometimes, Owen hated his job. Spending his days up to his elbows in alien guts and all the paperwork involved was bad enough but being woken up in the middle of the night and having to kick out his one-night stand ahead of schedule really was pushing it too far. And all to rescue Jack and teaboy from a flat tyre. Ridiculous.
He swore over and over again all the way, complaining as loudly as he could to the empty space of his car.
Finally, he got there, right where Jack had said he and teaboy would be. And there was the SUV.
Owen parked up next to it and peered inside. There was no one in the front. Owen peered into the back. There they were. Owen’s face formed itself into a sneer before he even thought about it. But then he saw their faces.
They looked peaceful. They looked happy. They were wrapped up in each other’s arms, smiling and in a deep sleep.
Owen swallowed down his feelings. It would be rather a shame to wake them. They looked…right, in each other’s arms. Owen found himself wishing he had someone to hold like that, someone to let his guard down with, someone to adore, someone who would adore him, a lover.
Owen brushed away those uncomfortable feelings and quietly got on with getting ready to change the tyre, as the Captain and his boy slept peacefully.
