Notes: With thanks to oncomingscone and rowanheart24 for their glorious help! Comments make me write more. I hope you enjoy this. I’ve been working on this story for nearly a year and it’s finally finished. I’ve very proud of it and I hope it’s good enough for my lovely readers! This is a finished series and won’t be abandoned. I’m planning to post a chapter a day (at roughly the same time) until it’s finished.

Ianto leaned against the wall and sighed. He was exhausted. He’d never realised how much harder it was to get clients without a pimp, especially now that there were two of them to support. He’d lost all his regulars, even Jack. Jack hadn’t been back since their argument. Ianto missed him. He still had his number and he’d take it out and look at it sometimes, but he hadn’t rung it. Something held him back.

He knew what held him back. It was fear. He’d got too close to Jack. Jack had got too close to him. It wasn’t safe in Ianto’s world to do that. It was against all rules. In this game, you stayed distant. You didn’t get attached. This  wasn’t Pretty Woman. A relationship with a punter could only end badly.

“Ianto, I’m hungry,” said Michael.

Ianto kicked a stone. “Yeah, I know.” He dug in his pocket and counted out what little money they had left. He passed a few coins over to Michael. “Go on. Go and get yourself a pasty or something. I’ll stay here.”

Michael took the money gratefully. “Don’t you want anything?”

Ianto shook his head. “No. I don’t really need to eat yet.”

Michael looked doubtful but his hunger drove him to not pursue it and to head for the nearest bakery.

Ianto leaned against the wall again and watched the road hopefully. It was quite a good spot here, for two boys without a pimp that is. Cars often went past and sometimes blokes on foot looking for a good time. They were often the shady ones though. Still, Ianto could not afford to be picky.

He could hear a car. He arranged himself, jutting out his crotch and pouting his lips. When the car rounded the corner, he’d meet the driver’s eyes and give them his best come hither look.

The car rounded the corner. It was a big black car. Expensive looking, impressive and with the word Torchwood written on the side.

Ianto tensed. Torchwood. Jack’s Torchwood. He couldn’t help it. He searched out the driver’s eyes. It was Jack, staring back at him with a shocked expression. He hadn’t been looking for him then. There was a woman in the passenger seat. Ianto glanced at her, then back at Jack and shook his head.

Jack stared back at him, the SUV slowing to a crawl. Ianto turned away, making it clear that this particular custom wasn’t welcome. He listened to the rumble of the engine for a few seconds more, then heard it drive away and he let out a sigh of relief. That was it now. Jack wouldn’t be back. He’d find another boy and Ianto could move on. He could ignore his feelings and survive. It was what he always had to do.

                                            * * *

“That was him, wasn’t it?” Suzie demanded as they drove away.

“Yes,” Jack said tightly.

“Well, why didn’t you go and see him?”

“I’m working.”

“You could have spared a minute to talk to him, Jack.”

Jack’s jaw clenched but he didn’t reply.

They drove for several minutes in silence. Suzie fiddled with the scanner, holding it up to search for any sort of signal.

“Is it picking anything up?” Jack asked eventually.

“Erm…”

“Damn, we’re getting nowhere here.”

“I’m doing my best, Jack. It’s just not picking anything up right now.” She frowned at it. “It should be,” she murmured.

Jack grunted. “Should be? That’s not damn well good enough. I thought my team was better than this. Or do you just not give a damn about these boys being killed?”

“Jack, we’re doing our best. It just takes time.”

“We haven’t got time. These kids are dying here. And it’s our job to stop it. We’re supposed to be protecting them.”

“Maybe we should head back now, Jack? Perfect the scanner?”

“No, Suzie. We’re not going back until we’ve found them. I don’t care how long it takes. We are finding them and putting a stop to this. Tonight.”

Suzie closed her mouth tightly and frowned down at the scanner. “I’ll reset it,” she said, her fingers whizzing over the keys. “Maybe…” She trailed off.

The next second, it began to beep fast. Jack’s head snapped round to look at her.

“It’s picking something up?”

“It’s picking two things up.”

“Two?”

“There’s something happening. Just the other side of the city centre.”

Jack put his foot down and they sped forwards. “We’ll be there in ten minutes!”

“Wait!”

Jack slammed on the brakes, sending them both jerking against the seat belts. “What is it?”

Suzie glared at him and rubbed her neck where the seat belt had caught it. “Ow.”

“What is it now?” he demanded.

“The other signal, Jack.”

“Oh. Shall we go there first?”

“No. Let me out. I’ll deal with that. You sort the other one.” She keyed in a new code to the sat nav.

“But what if…” Jack began as Suzie unbuckled her seat belt.

“The local signal is weaker. It could be just one alien. But the other one…it looks like there’s several. You should handle that.”

Jack nodded. “Yeah.”

She climbed out of the car and patted her coat where her gun was hidden. “I’ll sort this.”

He nodded. “Take care.”

She shut the door and he sped off. She watched him go calmly, then pulled out her mobile phone and dialled a number. She waited until it connected, then spoke in a low voice. They had their instructions. She turned and walked away to find a cab to catch back to the hub.

Looking forward to the next part.
