I’m planning to post a chapter a day (at roughly the same time) until it’s finished. Chapter List here

Jack paced. His head was full, too full. He needed to do something but he couldn’t do the thing he wanted to do. He couldn’t go and see Ianto. Ianto clearly wanted him to stay away so he would, for a while at least. But he was already craving Ianto’s presence and it had only been a couple of weeks.

He thought about the past few months. It had been a strange time, losing Maya after so long. He sank into his couch. He hadn’t thought about her in a while. She’d kind of drifted into the back of his head. He closed his eyes and he could see her face but it was the ghost of Ianto’s caress he could feel on his skin. Maya had been his best friend. She’d been everything. He hadn’t wanted to be with anybody else as long as he’d been with her. But now…now there was an ache inside him and the only time it was soothed was when he was with Ianto.

But he had a job to do. Torchwood had a job to do and they needed their leader to focus on it. But there was a part of him which didn’t give a damn about what was going on in Cardiff. And that part of his brain, just wanted to go to Ianto.

Nevertheless, he needed to be the leader. He needed to be Captain Jack Harkness.

He forced himself up from the couch, threw on his coat for the feel of it and strode out into the main hub.

“Right, progress report. Go.” His voice was brisk and business like. They all looked up.

“We’re…getting there,” said Tosh.

“All I want to know is, can you detect them yet. I don’t want to hear excuses or mumblings. I just want to know if you can do it or not.”

Tosh and Suzie exchanged glances. Owen rolled his eyes and muttered something about bastard bosses.

“Sort of.”

Jack sighed impatiently. “Sort of?”

“The scanners are programmed for detection but unfortunately it’s still a little vague. They can detect the DNA but they’re not refined so…we’re going to end up chasing their trail and not necessarily the actual aliens.”

“Sort of like tracking an animal in the wild?”

Tosh smiled, seeing Jack softening. “Exactly.”

Jack nodded. “Good, it’s not much but it’s a start. Owen, what about you?”

Owen shrugged. “I need more information before I can complete the tranquilliser.”

Jack gave him a hard look. “Owen, you and I both know damn well that a doctor of your qualifications and experience should be able to do this simple task with the information you’ve got.”

Owen looked away and shrugged. “It’s harder than it looks.”

Jack strode right up to him and glared down at him. “Cut the crap, Owen. How much time have you actually spent on this task?”

Owen shrugged. “I’ve been busy.”

“Well, as of now, you’re going to focus on the task I have given you and nothing else. Or you’ll quickly find yourself out of a job. You’ll have a hell of a lot of time on your hands then, won’t you?”

Jack didn’t wait for an answer. He turned on his heel and stalked to the door. As he went, he called out his instructions.

“Tosh, Owen, stay here and work on your jobs. Suzie, you and one of the scanners are with me.”

Suzie quickly followed him and ten minutes later, they were driving through the city in the SUV. Suzie had the scanner in hand and was directing Jack in following its readings. Jack knew the area the readings had led them to. It was an area he’d been to many times over the past few months. It was the area where all the rent boys were, near where he’d first met Ianto and where he’d last seen Ianto and Michael.

“Red light district, right?” Suzie said.

Jack nodded, concentrating on the road.

“Is he around here then? Your boy?”

Jack nodded. “Yeah. Somewhere.”

“I thought all these boys had somewhere they stayed? Street corner or something.”

“He did. But he’s gone now. Had to find somewhere else.”

“Turn left,” Suzie said and Jack did. “What do you like about him?”

Jack shrugged. “He’s just a boy, Suzie. He’s got a tight ass. Can we not talk about him, please?”

Suzie went quiet for a few minutes. “Turn right,” she said eventually.

Jack turned right.

“There are lots of boys, aren’t there?” Suzie asked. “But you keep going back to him. Have you been to anyone else?”

“What’s it to you?” Jack snapped.

“Maya was my friend.”

Jack pulled over. “What the fuck business do you have talking about her?”

“She talked to me a lot before she died, Jack. She…she wanted you to be happy. She wanted you to find somebody else.”

Jack tapped his thumbs on the steering wheel. “What are you trying to say, Suzie?”

“I’m trying to ask you if this boy of yours is who you’ve chosen to be with. She wanted you to chose.”

Jack was silent for a long time. He stared out of the window and at the dark street ahead of them. It was raining and the orange street lights reflected bright patterns in the murky puddles.

“She said she wanted me to find someone else to love,” he said.

“And have you found someone to love?”

Jack glanced at her and let out a long breath. “I dunno. But…I’ve found someone I…want to be with.”

Suzie gazed back at him and her eyes were wet. Then she blinked rapidly and smiled. “Good. I’m glad. She’d want you to be happy.”

He nodded, then looked back at the road and pulled away from the kerb. “Let’s see if we can track down these aliens then.”

Yeah I was surprised about Suzie but still suspicious. I love it when Jack is the leader - he's such a complex character so we can all play with him in different ways. Great update.
