Jack sat back in his office chair as Gwen left him alone for the first time since he’d come back to life. Jack let out a long breath. He’d been dead for days, the longest time ever.
Jack could feel Ianto edging into the room. Jack turned and looked at the young man. His hands were buried deep in his pockets and he chewed his lower lip, glancing up at Jack through his lashes.
Jack smiled across at him. “There’s my loyal soldier.” He’d meant it affectionately but Ianto suddenly flushed bright red and stared at his feet.
“Jack, I’m sorry…”
“Forget it, Ianto. It’s over now.”
He looked at Ianto who was still hovering in the doorway, hands still deep in his pockets.
“Come here, Ianto.”
Slowly, Ianto came closer and leaned against the desk. Jack watched him, quietly taking him in.
Ianto gazed unblinkingly at the floor and seemed lost in a world of his own.
“Ianto,” Jack said eventually.
Ianto looked up at him.
“Who did you see? In your vision?”
Ianto looked away, chewing his lip again.
“Ianto?”
“Lisa. It was Lisa.” His words came out in a rush, like he didn’t really want to admit to it.
“Oh.” So Ianto had seen Lisa. It had been the possibility of having Lisa back in his arms that had caused Ianto to betray Jack with all the others.
“She…she was Lisa from the old days, the way she used to be. She…she said people would die. That the only way to stop that was to open the rift. I’m sorry, Jack. I should have trusted that you knew what you were doing.”
“She didn’t say you’d have her back if you opened the rift?”
Ianto blinked at him. “No.”
“Oh.” Jack gazed at the smooth wood of his desk. He could hear Ianto breathing beside him.
“Did you see him?” Ianto murmured, breaking the silence.
“Hmm?” Jack glanced up. “Who?”
Ianto was looking evenly at him. “Your doctor.”
Jack frowned at him. “My doctor.”
“The one you talk about. In your sleep sometimes you say ‘doctor’. Who is he? Is he an old lover?”
Jack laughed. “Not exactly. It’s complicated. He’s not ‘a doctor’. He’s ‘the Doctor’. Do you know what I’m talking about?”
Ianto looked away and didn’t answer. Jack could practically see the cogs working inside Ianto’s brain. Jack let the silence hang, waiting for Ianto to speak first.
“Jack, why did you kiss me?”
Jack smiled. “Why shouldn’t I kiss you? I’ve kissed you lots of times.”
“Yes, but…in front of them. You kissed me in front of them.”
Jack grinned and took hold of Ianto’s hand. He held it close between both hands.
“I’m not ashamed of you, Ianto. I’m not ashamed of being with you. I know sometimes you think that but I’m not. I kissed you because I was glad to see you.”
Ianto looked at him. “I was glad to see you too. I thought…for a while there…I thought you really had died and that…I was going to have to get used to…life without you. I didn’t want to do that. I really didn’t want to do that.”
“I know.” He brought Ianto’s hand up to his mouth and kissed it. “But you’re not going to have to do that. I’ve told you this before. I’m not going anywhere.”
Ianto nodded mutely.
Jack stood so he was on a level with Ianto. He leaned forward and pressed a soft kiss to Ianto’s lips. Ianto was suddenly holding onto him tight, like he never wanted to let go. Jack held him back for a moment, letting Ianto breathe into his neck, then pulled away and gave Ianto a soft smile. “You know, I’d kill for a cup of coffee.”
Ianto shrugged regretfully. “Sorry, the coffee machine got broke when we…” He stopped, biting his lip.
“Oh. Well, it’s not your coffee magic but I could live with Starbucks.”
Ianto smiled. “Certainly, Sir.”
Jack grinned. “Feel free to use the expense account to buy a brand new coffee machine.”
“I will.” Ianto pulled away and stood up. “I’ll go and get that coffee then.” He turned and walked to the door.
“Hey, Ianto?” Jack said.
Ianto turned back. “Hmm?”
“Take Tosh and Owen with you, okay? You could use the extra hands and…well I need to talk to Gwen.”
Ianto nodded and gave him half a smile. “Of course, sir.” He hesitated, tongue sneaking out to lick his lips. “Jack…”
“Ianto.”
Ianto held his breath for a moment, gazing at Jack. Then he sighed. “Nothing. I’ll get your coffee.”
Jack sat back in his chair and watched Ianto go. On his way out, he passed Gwen on her way in. As Gwen perched on his desk, Jack watched Ianto as he wandered out of sight.
