Jack’s entire body ached and throbbed. Exhaustion overcame him as he made his way up Ianto’s garden path. Some nights, it really would be easier if he died. It was late, really late. There were only a couple of hours until Ianto would be getting up and getting ready for work and Jack knew he should have really caught a bit of rest at the hub. But he just needed to be with Ianto.
He took out his bunch of keys and found Ianto’s. Ianto had never actually presented him with a key. It had just turned up on his key chain one day. He supposed Ianto had just got sick of Jack waking him up in the middle of the night to answer the door.
Jack let himself in and locked the door behind him. As Ianto insisted, Jack took his boots of and lined them up in the hallway, then made his way through to Ianto’s bedroom. Ianto’s slow, steady breathing greeted him. Ianto was asleep.
Jack didn’t even have the energy to take his coat off. He lifted the covers and climbed in. Ianto was lying on his front, sound asleep. But, as if sensing Jack’s presence, he shifted closer and pressed his nose into Jack’s lapel. Jack wrapped his arm around him and held him close. He needed that steady presence right then, even though Ianto was asleep.
Jack put his nose in Ianto’s hair and breathed in. The cool, fresh smell of mint greeted him. He’d never have thought it would be a particularly comforting smell but the fact that it belonged to Ianto made it so. He wanted Ianto to wake up, to talk to him. But he wouldn’t wake him. It wasn’t really fair.
He stroked Ianto’s soft curls. “So glad I’ve got you,” he whispered, holding Ianto tight.
Ianto shifted and his hand curled around Jack’s waist. “’M here,” he murmured.
Jack looked down at him. Ianto’s eyes were still closed but his breathing had changed. He was definitely awake.
“Didn’t want to wake you,” Jack said and kissed his forehead.
“S’okay.” He opened one eyes and peered up at Jack. “You okay?”
Jack shrugged. “Bad night.”
Ianto turned his head into Jack’s chest and pressed light kisses there. “Do you want me to do anything?”
Jack shook his head. “Nah. I’m okay. Go back to sleep.”
Ianto frowned up at him, then pulled back and looked at his alarm clock. “It’s already four am. I’ll have to get up in an hour or so anyway.”
“Ianto…”
Ianto frowned at him. “No. Come on.” He got up. “Let’s go and have a bubble bath.”
Jack smiled. “A bubble bath?”
Ianto grinned, grabbed Jack’s hand and tugged him up. “Yeah.”
Firmly, Ianto led him straight to the bathroom. Jack watched him as Ianto sorted the bath out. How did Ianto do that? He could just make everything better, just like that. Just being near Ianto was comforting. Jack didn’t know why. Nobody else could make him feel like that.
It took Ianto only a few moments to get the bath ready and then Jack was sinking into the bath and back into Ianto’s strong arms. Jack closed his eyes. He was settled in Ianto’s lap, arms and legs around him and cushioned by his chest. Ianto stroked his arm, his chest, every part of him he could reach. Jack kept his eyes closed, allowing his aches and pains to be soothed by Ianto’s hands and the warm water.
“Do you want to talk about it?” Ianto asked gently.
Jack turned his head into Ianto’s wet, warm chest. “No. Just…hold me.”
Ianto tightened his embrace a little. “That, I can do.”
They didn’t talk. They just lay in the bath together, Jack wrapped securely in Ianto’s embrace, until the water went cold and it was time to face another day.
