I’ve been working on this story for nearly a year and it’s finally finished. I’ve very proud of it and I hope it’s good enough for my lovely readers! This is a finished series and won’t be abandoned. I’m planning to post a chapter a day (at roughly the same time) until it’s finished.
Suzie was satisfied. She’d warned Ianto off and he’d got the message. The little whore wouldn’t be back. He was out of Jack’s life and things could get back to normal. Once Jack forgot about Ianto, he wouldn’t be interested in rent boys getting murdered.
But still, there was evidence against her. If Jack continued to poke around, she could get in real trouble. She needed to pin it on somebody else now Kiral had been cleared. She was sure things would work out if she kept her head.
But the aliens were starting to become a danger. She’d protected them for a long time and they’d brought her bodies. But they hadn’t been able to get rid of her enemy. They were more trouble than they were worth now.

Jack sat with his chin in his hands and wondered what had gone wrong. He’d protected Ianto, looked after him, held him and now…now he’d left, just like everybody did.
“Feeling sorry for yourself?” came a soft voice.
He looked up and there was Tosh, smiling gently at him.
He scowled at his desk. “Yeah,” he said. “And I’ve got every right to.”
“Is this about your friend? The one who left?”
“Yeah. Sort of.”
“Who is he, Jack? It’s not like you to bring anybody new in here.”
“He needed my protection. If he’d stayed out there, he’d have got murdered.” He picked at a splinter on his desk. “He could be getting murdered now.”
“I don’t think so,” said Tosh.
Jack looked up at her. “Why not?”
She smiled. “Because he’s in the med bay with Owen right now.”

Ianto watched Owen examine Stuart’s body. He felt strange looking at that most powerful, frightening man, lying there as nothing more than a corpse. It had reduced him. Ianto couldn’t quite believe he’d ever been frightened of this pathetic man.
“How did he die? Was it the maggot?” he asked.
Owen glanced up at him. “Not sure. There’s definitely poison in his system but these injuries are more than enough to kill him.”
“Ianto!” Jack burst into the med bay and started towards Ianto.
Ianto flinched back and clenched his hands. “Hello.”
Jack held back uncertainly. “You left.”
Ianto looked down at the floor. “Sorry. It was kind of…too much.”
“I was worried about you.”
“I know but…” Ianto glanced back at Owen.
Owen raised his eyebrows and gave Ianto a nudge. “Tell him straight.”
Ianto sighed and looked back at Jack. “I’m not your slave, your prisoner or your boyfriend. You can’t keep me in here like that. I can’t live like that.”
Jack held up his hands. “You’re right. I’m sorry. I just wanted to keep you safe.”
Ianto softened. “I know.”
Jack took a deep breath and looked at Ianto with sincerity. “You’re free to come and go as you wish.”
Ianto nodded. “Thank you.”
Jack let out his breath, then moved past Ianto and towards the body. “Another death?” He paused. “Oh. Shit.”
“He’s my pimp. Ex. Found him dead before.” Ianto said, joining Jack by the side of the body. He gripped his cross tightly. “There was this…thing on his neck.”
“Malen maggot, Jack. Now having a snooze in our empty fish tank. I’m investigating the cause of death. If the maggot killed him, it could have been planted on him to do that. And if so, that means alien involvement.”
Jack was still staring at the body in dumb shock and he didn’t reply. “I…I think I…” He trailed off.
Suzie entered the med bay. “Another body? Is it connected to our current case?”
“It could be,” said Owen. “We don’t really know.”
Ianto was still watching Jack and biting his lip. “I don’t think…”
Suzie talked over him like he wasn’t there. “It makes perfect sense!” she said eagerly. “Jack, didn’t Kiral say he thought the aliens were being helped? This guy could be the one. He’s a pimp, right? If these boys were all his, they could have done something wrong, made him angry. Convenient way to dispose of them, don’t you think?”
She glanced at Ianto and narrowed her eyes. Ianto looked away and tried not to shrink into himself.
Jack looked distracted and unsure of himself. “I suppose we should investigate that possibility. Owen, conduct whatever tests you need. Get an autopsy done. Then maybe we’ll know.”
Suzie smirked. Ianto glanced at her, frowning. He wasn’t sure he understood her at all.
Everybody but Owen left the med bay. Jack was heading towards his office. Ianto started to follow until Suzie pulled him back. They were out of earshot of Jack, who carried on into his office.
“Listen, Ianto,” she said. “I’m sorry about what I said before. I was concerned about you. It’s a dangerous world at Torchwood, you know.”
He looked back at her doubtfully but didn’t speak.
Her voice was soft and she smiled kindly at him. “I’m really glad you’re back safely. Jack was really worried about you.” She glanced briefly in Jack’s direction, then back at Ianto. “He really cares about you.”
Ianto’s heart thudded.
“I think he might even be in love with you. You should make sure you stay safe. You should stay in here with him and stay safe. You should let him keep you here like he wants to.”
Ianto’s chest tightened. Keep him here? That was what Ianto was worried about. He couldn’t speak. He just nodded.
She gave him one last smile, then returned to her station. Ianto went after Jack.
* * *
Jack is leaning against his desk, waiting for Ianto. Ianto approaches, feels the full force of Jack’s eyes on him.
“You left,” Jack whispers.
Ianto approaches, cups Jack’s face and kisses him hard. “I had to.”
Jack wraps his arms around Ianto’s waist, holds him close, clings on tightly.
“Please stay now,” he whispers into Ianto’s neck. “Please. Don’t want to be without you.”
“Captain…”
“Please. Need you. Stay. Stay forever.”
“I can’t, Captain.”
“You can! I’ll give you a job. Good pay.”
“I have a job.”
Jack’s eyes open wide, then he glares at Ianto. “A job? You’re a whore, Ianto. Just a whore. It’s no job. It’s no life.”
“It’s the life I have, Jack.”
“I’m offering you a way out.”
“I don’t need a way out.” He pulls back. “I’m fine.”
“Fine? Men use you. They fuck you. They beat you. They come on your face. You’re a thing to them. An object. A toy. You’re nothing.”
Ianto blinks tears away.
Jack reaches for Ianto, tugs at his shoulders. “Be mine, Ianto. I treat you better than any of them.”
“I don’t want to be yours, Jack!” Ianto shouts. “ You’re no different to them. You treat me like a thing too. You’re the same. You’re just another client.”
Jack draws back his hand and slaps Ianto hard across the face. Ianto reels backwards, his head whipping to the side. A vivid red handprint appears on his pale cheek.
They stare at each other in dumb shock for nearly a minute. Then Jack reaches for Ianto, horror covering his face. He reaches up to touch his face but Ianto grabs hold of his wrist, a fierce look in his eyes.
“Don’t you ever do that again,” he growled.
“Ianto…”
“Not ever. I won’t take it. I don’t have to take it. You do it again and I’m gone. Understand?”
Jack swallows, then nods. “Yeah.” He looks down. “I’m sorry.”
He tugs on Ianto’s hand and Ianto lets him pull him close into a hug. “I’m so lost, Ianto. Please don’t leave me.”
Ianto wraps his arms around Jack and holds him close. He presses his mouth to his ear, holding him securely.
“You lost somebody,” Ianto whispers, stroking Jack’s hair.
Jack turns his head into Ianto shoulder and snuffles. “Yeah,” he says and will say no more.
