Anyone know about layouts?

I'm totally fed up with my Lj layout. It doesn't express who I am at all. But I have no idea how to change it without using any of the premade layouts which don't fit what I want. Can anybody clever help me? I've only got an unpaid account. Would I have to go to paid? I've been thinking about doing that. But does anybody know? And would anybody like to have a go at designing something for me if that's possible?
