Ianto watched Jack as the others filed out for the night. He’d been quiet, sort of distant since he and Tosh had come back. Ianto didn’t know why. Maybe something had happened. Maybe he was angry about what had happened while he’d been gone. Ianto had only done his best to stop Owen from breaking the rules. Or maybe he was angry he'd failed.

When the door closed behind the others, Ianto took a deep breath and went into the office.

“Sir, is there anything I can get for you before I leave?” It was his customary question at the end of the day and what Jack wanted usually ended in Ianto staying at least another hour and often for the night.

Jack glanced up at him and smiled faintly. “No Ianto.” He sounded weary. “There’s nothing you can get for me.”

“Oh.” Ianto didn’t know what to say to that. Jack never said no to that offer, not ever. “Erm I’ll go then, Sir. See you tomorrow.” He did his best to hide his disappointment as he turned to go.

Jack raised his head. “No don’t go. S…stay with me. Please.”

Ianto, surprised, turned back to Jack. There was a wide open vulnerable look in Jack’s eyes. Ianto had never seen him look quite so sad and alone.

Ianto took a hesitant step towards him. “Maybe I could get you a drink, Sir?”

Jack shook his head, smiling somewhat bitterly. “No. I’ve had enough already.” He swallowed hard. “I…I don’t…Ianto we never made any rules, did we?”

“Rules, Sir?”

“About us. Well there wasn’t an us. We just...fell into bed together, didn’t we?”

Ianto smiled. “Technically, Sir I believe it started with me pushing you against the wall.”

Jack smiled, a real though faint smile. “Yes, it did.” He sighed and ran his fingers through his hair. “Did you…want more?”

Ianto frowned. That was a confusing question. He’d never actually thought about anything more. At first, it had just been an escape from all the bad things and he’d known it had been for Jack too. Then well…it had just felt right, comfortable and cosy, a warm place in the cold of the world.

“I don’t think we need to…worry about that, Sir.”

“Don’t we?”

Ianto shook his head. “I think we’re getting what we need, aren’t we?”

Jack looked away. “Something happened, when I was trapped. There was another man.” Jack’s eyes wrinkled a little and his voice sounded brittle. “It didn’t mean anything, Ianto.”

Ianto frowned. How could Jack say this other man didn’t mean anything to him when his eyes were wet with tears just from speaking about him?

Ianto stepped forward. “Yes he did,” he said gently. He placed his hand on Jack’s. “What happened?”

Jack smiled gratefully. “Ianto…” He seemed unable to speak much more.

Ianto held his hand, squeezed it then tugged him up. “Come here.”

He pulled him close and swayed him gently. Jack put his hands around Ianto’s waist and his face in Ianto’s shoulder. There was no music but they were dancing, just holding each other and dancing.

After a long moment Jack began to speak, in a broken voice barely louder than a whisper. “He was just a man, ordinary but not. Brave, strong, good. He… I stole his identity, so many years ago. I’d never met him. He was just a name.”

Ianto held his captain tightly and let him pour his heart out. The man who never let any weakness show, the man who led his team and saved the world, the man who would never even tell anyone his birthday. Now he was talking and Ianto was listening.

“But he was there, just himself and I knew he was going to die. There was nothing I could do.”

He pulled back enough to look at Ianto. “Ianto sometimes, two people meet. They belong so far apart but in one moment they belong together. Sometimes it’s a lifetime, sometimes years or months. Sometimes it’s just one night.”

Ianto wanted to glance away but he couldn’t. He gazed right back into Jack’s clear blue eyes. He understood. He knew, he felt exactly what Jack meant.

He kissed Jack, softly and sweetly on the mouth, then put their heads close and they just danced.

“You’ve got to hold onto those moments,” Ianto whispered as they danced to music no one could hear. “When they come, you’ve just got to hold on and feel every second cause you only get them once.”

Jack didn’t reply. He just held onto Ianto that little bit tighter.
