I’ve been working on this story for nearly a year and it’s finally finished. I’ve very proud of it and I hope it’s good enough for my lovely readers! This is a finished series and won’t be abandoned. I’m planning to post a chapter a day (at roughly the same time) until it’s finished
Ianto poured over the paper. It had been three days and he had been searching non-stop for a job since that night and he hadn’t had a client since. He was getting out.
“I think you’re crazy,” said Thomas. “We’ve got it made here, Ianto. We’re our own bosses, we got a good little spot here, what do you want to go and do some poxy job for?”
“Don’t you ever get tired of this, Thomas? I’m tired of being used, tired of being just a thing for all those men. I want to be somebody different.”
Thomas smirked at him. “So, are we not good enough for you then?” he asked, teasingly.
Ianto rolled his eyes. “Course you are. I’m just…I’m so sick of this. I’ve been doing it since I was fourteen you know and suddenly…suddenly, it all just feels wrong.”
Thomas sat down beside him. “Is it about that client you had? That boy? ‘Cause we all have clients like him. Some of them just don’t care.”
“It wasn’t that. It…it was like, he should have been innocent. He was just this kid but…I...I changed him, by being a whore, I made him something bad too.”
“You didn’t make him treat you like that.”
“No. But we let them treat us like that. We make everyone around us dirty. And I’m sick of it.”
Thomas looked away and nodded. “Yeah.” He was quiet for a moment and Ianto wanted to reach out to him but he didn’t.
Thomas looked back at him with a smile. “I guess we’d better find you a job then. Listen, my cousin works for this big hotel. They’re looking for a receptionist. With that smile, that lovely telephone voice and those brains of yours, you’ll be a shoe in. We can fake a couple of references.”
Ianto grinned at him. “Honest?”
“Yep! On one condition.”
“What’s that?”
“You don’t run off and leave me on my own just because you’ve got yourself a real job.”
Ianto smiled. “Promise.”
Thomas nodded. “Then let’s get your application sorted.” He nudged Ianto and smirked. “First time you’ve had one of them, eh?”
Ianto grinned. “Yeah.”
* * *
The hotel was big but it wasn’t posh in the slightest. It was in a large city block. The rooms were small and the prices ridiculously cheap. The clientele was almost as rough as those he saw on the streets after boys. But it was a job and it paid enough to keep him going. They’d snapped him up and he worked hard for them. This was his new life and he was going to try his hardest at it. He was going to be the best kind of person he could be.
He still met up with Owen. Not every day, since he worked daytimes now. But he had Wednesdays and Sundays off. They’d meet Wednesday lunchtimes in that same café. Owen had a new case. People were turning up dazed and with missing hours. They talked about it. Owen filled him in on all the details.
“The incidents are completely random, of course. We’ve never seen anything like this before. Jack’s no help of course.”
Ianto looked over the figures he’d written down. It was a list of all of the times the attacks had occurred so far. There was something about them, something which bothered him.
“There’s a pattern here,” he said.
Owen swallowed his mouthful of strawberry tart. “There is?”
“Yes. I’m not sure. They’re in groups of threes. Sixteen, thirty two, then sixty four minutes between each attack then the pattern starts again.”
Owen craned over. “Really?” he asked through another mouthful of tart.
“Yes, what could cause that?”
“The rift maybe?”
“Could be. But doesn’t the rift open more often than that?”
“Different frequencies perhaps. We’ll look into it.”
Ianto nodded and slid his piece of paper across towards Owen, who folded it up and put it in his pocket.
Ianto looked down at his hands. “How’s Jack doing?”
“Not so bad. He’s sold his house, the one he shared with Maya. Too many memories, he said. He’s a bit more himself these days.”
Ianto nodded. “Good. I think…he’s a good person…under everything and he…he should be happy.”
“So should you.”
Ianto smiled shyly. “I think I am.”
